My Hummingbird

The Hummingbird that has claimed ownership of the New Zealand Flax. This little guy or gal won’t allow any other hummer to drink. He even chases off larger birds. Look James, he even has a glint in his eye. Never be afraid to Photoshop. 😉

The intruder is on the left. The one on the right is the owner and he promptly chased the other one off.

Close-up of the intruder.

Intruder even closer. I wonder if the open beak was meant to be threatening?

  1. I love how the wings start to disappear into the background! But remember – a glint in the eye is what gives an animal shot life! Maybe a harsh flash would have been great to combat the soft skylight. Never be afraid to make light do what you want!

  2. Cool series. Is the white background natural?

  3. Yes, thin layer of clouds so it is a bright but very white sky. When these flowers first began to bloom there were many hummingbirds that were drinking from them, but this past week, this little one has taken over and claimed ownership! He’s getting used to me so I hope to get better closeups.

To attempt to lure him to the lower flowers I poured homemade nectar in the blossoms. He tasted it once and stuck his tongue in and out as if to try to get the taste off and quickly went back to the other flowers. lol
